Homage to Domingo and Wood

I was sorting my stuff (again) when I saw this piece of work I did in one of my college class.

I thought of doing something that would illustrate "the Filipinos of today" hence I decided to use Damian Domingo and Grant Wood's "American Gothic" as references which I then combined with "Pinoy Pop".

Front of "Mabuhay" magazine's 1982 cover.

A few of the works featured in the magazine. (Not sure though if all are by Domingo.)

A frayle? (friar) or perhaps a Government official.

A mestiza indio wearing a staple clothing back in the day: a
baro (top), saya (skirt) and alampay (shawl).

I just love the detailing in these type of illustrations. Here, a pair of what appears to be insulares or Spaniards born in Spain en route to the church is seen.

A mestiza resting after a day's work in her camisa and tapis.

Another mestiza off to church wearing a baro y saya.

An indio or local off to a day of sabong (cockfight).

Fin. :)

Happy

Just received a good news about something I "ventured in" recently. I can't disclose the details yet. All I can say is that "everything I put into it" paid off. SOOOO excited for the next step. :)

Something new

I recently tried my hands at caricature and although I don't have any previous experience (to say the least) I'm happy with the results. Now, can you name the following? :)

Pint-sized couture part 17 "Let the Sun Shine In"

For this edition of Pint-Sized Couture, I'm channeling my inner "hippieness" and dressed my muse in something which echoes the spirit of a period where free sex, drugs and love was the norm.

A fashion spread from US Vogue (November 2001).

The cast of "Almost Famous" (2000).

Robin Wright (Penn) as Jenny Curran from "Forrest Gump" (1994).

Anne Bancroft in a still from "The Graduate" (1967).

Leopard print jacket, fitted pants, scarf, boots and bag all "vintage".

Spread the love.....:)

Pint-sized couture parts 14, 15 and 16 "Medieval Mode"

I was trying to get rid of a few unwanted stuff when I found a few of my college projects.

My "Ladies in Waiting" from the Medieval Times.

Petrus Christus, "Portrait of a Female Donor", c. 1450

Rogier van Weyden, "Portrait of Isabelle of Portugal", 1445-1450

Lady in Waiting No. 1 is wearing a blue houppelande with velvet detail at the neckline with a camisole underneath. A henin completes her outfit.

Found this photo which reminded me of the one I made. Coincidence perhaps? :)

File:Hans Holbein Temple Detail.jpg

This one features another version of the houppelande but with a "fur" detail at the neckline and a heart-shaped henin instead of a cone-shaped. I'd say that this is a personal favorite.

Close-up

Faye Dunaway as Yolande D'Aragon in the film "The Messenger" which is a retelling of the life and times of Joan of Arc.

Our last Lady in Waiting is wearing a surcote over a fitted dress with a cape.

Her hair is kept in a mesh bag sewn with pearls.

In case you're wondering, The Ladies in Waiting are all "safe". :)

A Surgery of the Fashionable Kind

For this project, a friend had asked me to rework this dress.

I just love the lace detail in it.

Can I say that it just reminded me a bit of the dress Kate Winslet wore in "Titanic"? :)

Now, let's get these hands busy.....

Not exactly the look I envisioned but......

.......something more like this.

A view of the back....

and voila! :)
